Lone Star Abstract & Title Co. (“Lone Star”) recently learned about a data security incident that may have impacted a limited amount of personal information. Lone Star identified suspicious email activity on its email system and immediately took action to secure its email environment. Lone Star also investigated the activity and found no evidence that any personal information had been (or will be) misused. The security of your personal information is very important to us, and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
What Happened?
On or around March 6, 2023, Lone Star identified suspicious activity associated with its email environment. We immediately implemented our incident response protocols, took steps to secure the email environment, and engaged independent computer forensic experts to assist with an investigation. The investigation found that there was unauthorized access to one email account in our email system between approximately February 9, 2023 and March 6, 2023. However, that investigation could not determine what information within that account had been viewed or otherwise accessed during that access. To further our investigation, we engaged a vendor to assist us with reviewing the contents of the account to identify any personal information present at the time of the unauthorized access. We learned that personal information was present in the account on June 13, 2023 and letters were mailed to those individuals for which Lone Star had addresses.
What Information Was Involved?
From the review, it appears that individuals’ names and some combination of addresses, Social Security numbers, driver’s license or state identification numbers, and financial account numbers may have been present in the accounts.
What We Are Doing
We want to assure you that we are taking steps to minimize the risk of this happening in the future. Since the incident, we changed all passwords and enabled multi-factor authentication.
